Measure each gutter run separately

Walk around the home and break the project into sections. A front straight run, a garage run, a rear porch run, and a side return should each be listed on its own. Measure the horizontal length where the gutter will sit, not the length of the roof slope.

• Run length
  Measure fascia board to fascia board in feet and inches.
• Corners
  Count inside and outside corners separately.
• End caps
  Count open gutter ends that need caps.
• Outlets
  Mark where each downspout connects to the gutter.

Downspouts, elbows, and accessories

Downspouts are usually ordered in 10 foot lengths, so an 11 foot downspout may require 20 feet of material. Add the approximate height for each downspout, then note whether you need 2×3, 3×4, or round downspouts. Include elbows, outlets, hangers, guards, splash blocks, and any special notes about where water should drain.

The more clearly you separate the parts, the easier it is to review the order before fabrication.

Photos make review easier

Photos help the team spot corners, fascia conditions, tricky access, and places where a simple measurement might miss something. A few wide photos of each side of the home are usually more useful than close-ups alone.
