  Include height, size, elbows, outlet locations, and straps.
• Check access.
  Think through ladder placement, height, landscaping, decks, fences, and power lines.

Parts people forget

DIY jobs often miss end caps, outlets, elbows, screws, straps, sealant, miters, and splash blocks. Add photos if you can. They help us spot parts that are easy to miss from a written list.

Safety comes first

Gutter installation can involve long materials, ladders, roof edges, and power lines. If the project feels unsafe, hire a qualified contractor instead of forcing a DIY install.

Materials needed for gutter installation

Make a separate list for each run. Not every project needs every fitting, and all parts should match your gutter size, profile and material.

• Gutter runs: location, length in feet and inches, size, material and finish.
• End caps: count open ends. A corner connection is not an open end.
• Inside and outside corners: record each change in direction and the fitting required.
• Outlets: identify where each downspout connects to the gutter.
• Downspouts: count drops and record the required length for each. IO Gutters orders downspouts in 10-foot sections; an 11-foot requirement uses two sections.
• Elbows and straps: count offsets at the eaves, wall attachments and changes in direction.
• Hangers and fasteners: confirm compatibility with the gutter and the surface they attach to.
• Sealant and joining supplies: use products approved for the selected material and installation method.
• Optional items: guards, discharge extensions or splash blocks where the project calls for them. Confirm availability and inclusion in the final quote.

The estimator starts each gutter run with two end caps and uses one hanger per three feet, rounded up for each run. Those are estimating assumptions. Check the actual parts list and the manufacturer’s installation requirements before ordering or installing.

A simple parts-count example

For one straight, 30-foot run with two open ends and one downspout, start with a 30-foot gutter, two end caps and one outlet. The estimator adds ten hangers. Downspout length, elbows, straps, fasteners and discharge parts still depend on the house. This example is a counting aid, not a complete installation specification.

• Confirm the final run lengths and finish with the team.
• Plan a clear delivery location and enough help to handle long gutter runs.
• Check the fascia condition and arrange repairs before mounting gutters.
• Have the correct tools, compatible fittings and a safe access plan ready.
• Review the delivery checklist before work starts so missing or incorrect parts can be addressed.
